February 19 - Side meeting on Sanitation in Small Towns

GIZ Uganda and pS-Eau will share reflections from their current projects in Uganda and Senegal and from recent research programmes. → in Northern Uganda, GIZ has initiated the development of town sanitation plans (TSPs) in six small towns, with the aim to coordinate, integrate and improve various sanitation-related measures at the local level including sanitation marketing and behaviour change communication, involvement of the local private sector, stakeholder participation and law enforcement. → in Senegal, pS-Eau is leading a research-action programme, which has carried out a mapping and diagnosis of the situation of sanitation in small towns, capitalized on experiences from 5 localities and is now currently developing monitoring tools. → In partnership with Cranfield University, pS-Eau identified and mapped sanitation initiatives in small towns from the literature, and analysed key issues regarding their viability.

Friday February 22 - What Happens Next: Steps to take after recognizing international non-sewered sanitation standards

This half-day workshop will: 

  • Provide a brief, non-technical background on ISO 30500 and ISO 24521
  • Outline a national standards body review process, lab & testing capacity
  • Describe ISO 30500 testing, conformity assessment & certification
  • Share insights from a national sanitation implementer
