1. Informal Settlements & Waste Water Treatment Plant in Cape Town

Monday, February 18, 2019 at 8:00 AM

This field trip will provide conference attendees with a deep dive into the current sanitation context within the municipality of Cape Town. Participants will visit 3-4 different examples of basic water and sanitation services being implemented within the informal settlements of Cape Town via the Informal Settlement Basic Services Branch. The Informal Settlement Basic Services Branch implements a variety of different toilet solutions, such as; full flush toilets, portable flush toilets, chemical toilets, and container-based toilets making up the majority. They also provide emptying services for these toilets, and the faecal sludge is taken to the Borcherds Quarry WWTP for treatment and processing. Participants will then also visit the Borcherds Quarry WWTP, which in the past few years has undergone extensive upgrades and extensions, including building a separate FSM facility. The FSM facility has been re-designed to improve efficiency and capacity. The older part of the WWTP, Stercus is also being upgraded. Extensive ventilation and odour control facilities has been provided at the most affected process units at the plant. Lastly, a new administration facility has been provided, utilising existing buildings.

Registration for the Field Trip is available on the registration page. Note that space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
